How to do greater works than Jesus Christ is a mystery. He healed the leper, cured the blind and lame, raised the dead and much more. How can we possibly do greater things than that?

Who Jesus Is

In considering how to do greater works, we must first establish who Christ is. In the beginning was the Word and the Word was with God and the Word was God. The Word became flesh and dwelt among us, John 1:1,14. Jesus was total man and total God for God covers Himself with light as a cloak, Psalm 104:2. Then God cloaked Himself with flesh and dwelt among man.

God walked with Adam in the Garden of Eden. He appeared as the pre-incarnate Christ to the Old Testament saints. Clothed in flesh Christ walked among the disciples.

He came from heaven, John 6:38, and knew from experience what the prophet tried to describe in Ezekiel 1. When we read it we see in a mirror dimly, 1 Corinthians 13:12. Jesus is Alpha and Omega, Revelation 22:13, knowing the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. By Him all things were created both in the heavens and on earth, Colossians 1:16.

Faith

No one comes to Christ unless the Father, who sent Christ, draws him, John 6:44. To do greater works we have to be drawn to Christ, and accept the great gift of salvation. Then believe with all our heart. Faith is a gift from God, Ephesians 2:8 and we must operate in that faith.

Jesus said, The works that I do the believer will do because I go to the Father, John 14:12. The key being, ‘because Jesus went back to the Father’. There He intercedes for us, Romans 8:34, and knows what we face every day.

The Miracle

If any man love me, he will keep my word and My Father will love him. We will come unto him and make Our abode with him, John 14:23. The miracle is that God not only indwells, but as mortal beings we are unique. Whatever we ask in Christ’s name He will do it, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son, John 14:13. The miracle is that God chooses to use us through the power of the anointing.

Jesus made the way for fallen mankind to be reunited with their Heavenly Father. The indwelling Holy Spirit empowers them to live God’s way and do His will on earth. We do not do the greater works because of who we are, but because of who He is. Believers are fellow-heir with Christ, Romans 8:16, partaking in all that Christ is, including His authority.

True followers of Christ are human beings who are cloaked with the presence of the Almighty God, the great I Am Who I Am, Exodus 3:14. The are infilled and led by the Holy Spirit. It is Christ working through us, as the Spirit intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words, Romans 8:26.

What are the Works

Hebrews 12 lists the Old Testament saints who were saved because of their faith in the redemptive work of the coming Messiah. The greater works is a firm belief in Christ

The works that the believer does are multifaceted, encompassing both the miraculous and everyday living, based on the teachings of Christ. They are the collective impact of empowered and unified efforts of believers across all time and geography.

Sowing and Reaping

Jesus did it all at Calvary when He died for the sins of the world. He alone had the currency to pay the price for the redemption of fallen man. Now, He who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together. For one sows and another reaps, John 4:36.37.

When Jesus came to earth he operated only in the nation of Israel, and then only in a small area of that nation. Then Paul evangelized large areas of the known world.

Christ’s resurrection and return to the Father enables the believer to do the work of God globally and call all men to repentance. Followers of Christ work in every tongue, tribe and nation on earth, preaching the Gospel to the ends of the earth, Acts 1:8.

Christ Centred

To do greater works than Christ is to live a totally Christ-centred life on a day-to-day basis. I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. The life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who love me and gave Himself up for me, Galatians 2:20.

 Without faith it is impossible to please Him, Hebrews 11:6. We can know the spiritual realm only through faith. The greatest work we do is that through faith we worship our Heavenly Father in spirit and in truth, John 4:24, for we have not seen Him.

Greater Works

By faith we preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ and pray that the word will be received and find fertile ground. Only through acceptance of the Gospel can lives be changed and people become Born Again, John 3:7. To receive eternal life is the greatest miracle of all.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit true followers of Christ can have the deep compassion and service that Jesus displayed on earth. Only through Christ can we know forgiveness and reconciliation, both with God and our fellow man.

It is through the power of the Holy Spirit that the true believer will strive to attain to the unity of the faith and the knowledge of the Son of God. To a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fulness of Christ, Ephesians 4:13.

The greater works are that we have the choice to mature into the likeness of Christ. He will fill us with His Holy Spirit up to the amount we desire to be filled and so do His work on earth. We have the ability to pass that knowledge of Christ onto others, that their lives too might be transformed into the image of the One who created them.
