Does God Need Man

Why Does God Need Us?5 min read

Does God need us is something not many people stop to think about. They are too busy thinking about whether or not they need God and what He can do for them.

The truth is that God does not need us for He is total in Himself. You cannot add to God or detract anything from God. He is the Great I Am That I Am, Genesis Exodus 3:14.

God Is

God has many attributes, such as holiness, righteousness, mercy, love, truth, justice, and so on. However, the fundamental fact is that God Is total in Himself. He gives kindness, blessings, love, power, etc., yet nothing of Himself is diminished.

So, the question is why did He create the universe? Why did He create Adam when He knew what Adam would do? God’s ways are truly beyond the human comprehension, Isaiah 55:8,9.

God is Omniscient

God is All-knowing and knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. Long before He created Adam He knew what Adam would do. Satan talked to Eve, but God already knew what Satan would do, how Eve would act and Adam react, Genesis 3. God knew what suffering and heartache would follow and how degraded fallen man would become.

However, at the moment of cataclysmic catastrophe, God announced His master plan, Genesis 3:15. He had already provided a Way of salvation, redemption, justification, sanctification and glorification for the created. The Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8.

Does God Need Man?

The short answer is no, God does not need man as He is complete in Himself. So why, in His graciousness and loving kindness, does God need redeemed humanity? He is totally without the need of any others. However, in His sovereignty God elected to have a people for His own possession, 1 Peter 2:9.

The wonder is that He chose to have the created walk in a covenantal relationship with Him. A relationship that is tried and tested on an earthly plane. A relationship that will continue into eternity.

To understand that better, you have to get the mortal mind around the fact that God lives in the eternal now. With God there are no yesterdays or tomorrows, only ‘Now’.

This is why we are predestined to be conformed into the image of the Son, Romans 8:29,30., for you are already seated in heavenly places, Ephesians 2:6. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne, Revelation 3:21.

The Trinity

God chose to manifest as mere mortal man, in the form of the Son of God, Jesus Christ. This achieved several awesome things. The advent of God on earth proved how much God loves the created, John 3:16. Jesus also proved that a sinless man could live in holy communication with the Father, totally defeating Satan’s warped plans. Christ’s death and resurrection also made the Way for sinful man to be reunited with a holy God in an eternal relationship.

God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit bought about a covenant that man could enter into, for God also gave man a free will. Every man can choose to accept or reject so great a salvation, Hebrews 2:3. Jesus said, If anyone loves Me he will keep my word. And My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our abode with him, John 14:23. God does not need us, yet He chose to draw us to Himself. We do not walk this earthly walk alone.

The Covenant

A covenant requires two parties to form a legal agreement. The two parties, in this instance, are God and God for God chooses to operate only within a covenant.

The Godhead is made up of three Persons, yet all three are One, 1 John 5:7. Whatever One does the Other Two are in instant accord. God chose to reveal Himself to fallen man, through the Son of God, Jesus Christ. Jesus came to earth as total man, yet total God.

Jesus went willingly to Calvary, not because He needs us, but in obedience to the will of the Father. When Jesus went to the Cross of Calvary in the momentous spiritual battle with Satan, all Three of the Godhead were present and in total accord. Jesus bore the sins of the world, 2 Corinthians 5:21, that He would take the punishment fallen man rightly deserved. In effect, God’s punishment fell on God, for once man had sinned, God could not revoke the justifiable punishment. Thus, God formed a covenant with God.

God Sovereignly Chose Us

God chose the nation Israel to be His representative on earth, a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people for God’s own possession, Deuteronomy 14:2, 1Peter 2:9. The believing Gentile is grafted into this promise, Romans 11:19.

We are grafted into the family of God that we might eternally sit in covenantal relationship with God. We are hid with Christ Jesus in God, Colossians 3:3. In the meantime we are His witnesses on earth doing the bidding of the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Key

The key to all this is faith, for without faith it is impossible to please Him, Hebrews 11:6. God gave man the gift of free will and faith is a gift from God Ephesians 2:8. A W Tozer wrote, “Unbelief is perverted faith, for the non-believer makes a god of himself. He prefers to put his faith in a dying man, instead of an eternal God”.

George Muller said “Faith is the assurance that the thing which God has said in His Word is true, and that God will act according to what He has said in His Word. This assurance, this reliance on God’s Word, this confidence is faith in the One who created us.”

Without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He Is and He is a rewarder of those who seek Him, Hebrews 11:6. God made a Sovereign choice when He created man and we can make a choice to accept God through faith in Him. God chooses to need us.
