How To Comprehend the Eternal Now5 min read

The eternal now is where God dwells, for with God there is no yesterday or tomorrow, only today. This is almost impossible for the time-driven mortal mind to comprehend.

Eternal Now

God is eternal and dwells in the everlasting now, so God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. When you get your head around this, predestination makes sense. God has lived all our tomorrows, just as He has lived all our yesterdays. Nothing we do can surprise God for He knows all. He knows our beginning and how we will end up.

Time has no effect on God, as with the Lord one day is like a thousand years and a thousand years like one day, 2Peter 3:8. More than that, He is the beginning and the end simultaneously. For God the past, present and future are Now.

Was, Is and Is to Come

When we speak of God we can only use human terms, but God is Spirit, John 4:24. It’s like trying to communicate with another human being but you don’t speak a common language. That is why we need the Holy Spirit to assist us.

The prophet Ezekiel struggled to find human words to describe the throne room of God, Ezekiel 1. When we speak of spiritual things it is as if we live in parallel universes. First there is the natural, then the spiritual,1 Corinthians 15:26, from a human point of view. With God the spiritual came first. In the beginning was the Word, John 1:1.

Instant Communication

So, let’s make the comprehension of the eternal now a little more complicated. The Godhead is made up of three Persons, yet all three are One, 1 John 5:7. Whatever One does all Three are in instant accord, sharing instant communication.

God sovereignly chose to manifest Himself in the flesh, through the Son. Yet the Son was in the Godhead, John 1:1, for the Godhead has no beginning and no ending.

I am the Alpha and Omega, says the Lord God, who is and was and who is to come, the Almighty, Revelation 1:8. This gives the sense of past, present and future. However, those terms cannot apply to God as they are human terms. God is eternal, always was, ever is and always will be totally unchanging, Hebrews 13:8. Not only that He is simultaneously Alpha and Omega, for He is the beginning and the ending.

God Indwells All Things

God created all things and is totally outside all things. He keeps the stars in place, counts their number and gives names to them all, Psalm 147:4. He upholds all things and indwells all things, Ephesians 4:6.

God’s ways are beyond our comprehension, Job 37:5, particularly when you consider God does not need us, for He is total in Himself. Yet, He chose to reveal Himself to humanity and dwelt among us through Christ Jesus, that we might know Him, 2 Corinthians 5:18.

His sovereign desire is that the created will enter a covenantal, love relationship with Him. God desires to be known as our Father and Friend for He delights in fellowship with the created, now and for all eternity.

More than that, God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit make their abode in the spirit of the believer, John 14:23. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price, therefore glorify God in your body, 1 Corinthians 6:20. Israel are His chosen people and eternal witness on earth, so we too are His witnesses and servants on earth, 1 Corinthians 5:9. For all eternity we will show the loving kindness and mercy of God.

Are Eternal

Only humans are time and space driven. We are born, live and die, if the Lord does not return first. Yet, God chose to give us the free will to choose to become eternal. You have to laugh at man’s attempts to find longevity. All man has to do is freely accept God’s gift of salvation and he has instant longevity in the spiritual sense, John 3:16.

This life is a testing ground, for untried faith has little value. Adam walked with God for a long time before he sinned and became mortal. How could someone who was perfect and lived in a perfect world, desire to exchange the immortal for mortal? He was made in the image of God, Genesis 1:27, so why would he believe the lie that he could be like God, Genesis 3.5. Like Adam we are wonderfully and fearfully made yet fallen man still tries to be a god.

God knew what Adam would do long before He made Adam a living soul. Man’s salvation was already in existence for the Lamb was slain from eternity, Revelation 13:8. Calvary was not ‘Plan B’. So, how precious in the sight of God, are those who believe in Him, Psalm 116:15., for the full cost of redemption is also beyond human comprehension.

Comprehending the Eternal Now

Our ‘now’ is that we are already seated in heavenly places, Ephesians 2:6. Sure, we have to work out time here on earth, for we are to be in the world but not of the world, John 17:14. However, the greater glory already exists, for we are ‘now’ seated in heavenly places.

That also means that our arch-enemy Satan is also in his eternal place. The day he rebelled in heaven, Isaiah 14:13-16; Ezekiel 28:2513-19, he was already beaten.

To comprehend the eternal now is to live in that eternal now, for we are hid in Christ Jesus in God, Colossians 3:3. We are already seated on His throne even as He is seated on His Father’s throne, Revelation 4:21. All we have to do is yield our lives to our Creator for He knows us better than we know ourselves. We are to lift up our head and think on heavenly things, for our redemption draws nigh, Luke 21:28.
