The astonishing value of being the Apple of God’s Eye has implications that few of us realize. This amazing statement appears only four times in the Bible.

Apple of God’s Eye

The apple of God’s eye is one of the most intimate and protective expressions in Scripture. It speaks of something:

• Held close to the heart of God 
• Carefully guarded
• Deeply treasured.

The Pupil

The ‘apple of the eye’ refers to the pupil of the eye – the most sensitive and protected part of the body. Sight being the most important aspect of the senses, delivering the most information about the world we live in. 

How the eye works:

Sight is vital to our wellbeing – if the eye is clear your whole body will be full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness, Luke 11:34. We instinctively shield our eyes because the eyes are vulnerable.

David’s Prayer

Keep me as the apple of the eye. Hide me in the shadow of Your wings, Psalm 17:8. David was asking for God’s eternal loving protection.

This comes from a close and intimate, covenantal relationship with the great I Am That I Am, Exodus 3:14. The place where transformation into maturity takes place, Ephesians 4:13.

God’s protection does not come from being:

• Distant
• Mechanical
• Religious.

It comes with being a follower of Christ. For the eyes of the Lord move to and fro throughout the earth that He may strongly support those whose heart is completely His, 2 Chronicles 16:9.

The Word

The Word instructs us to keep My commandments and live, and My teaching as the apple of your eye, Proverbs 7:2. We are to protect God’s wisdom in us.

Open my eyes, that I may behold wonderful things from Your law, Psalm 119:18. The law that Christ fulfilled, Matthew 5:7, so that we might live in the awesome benefits of the New Covenant.

Focus

When the Truth is feasted on and guarded internally, it shapes what you become spiritually – how you look at life and your part in God’s eternal plan. For as a man thinks within himself, so he is, Proverbs 23:7.

Whatever becomes the apple of your eye, becomes the:

• Focus of your attention
• Object of your protection
• Centre of your perception.

Identification with His People

God created man to be in fellowship with Him. Jesus died in our place that sinful man could return to that eternal relationship. A relationship that is even better than what Adam originally had.

God identifies with what the created goes through. Have You put my tears in Your bottle, and are they not written in Your book? Psalm 56:8.

What touches you touches something deeply personal to God. He who touches you, touches the apple of His eye, Zechariah 2:8. It is called empathy – Jesus wept with the ones He loved, John 11:35.

Our Place

Our journey on earth is the testing ground that fits us for heavenly habitation. God is outside time, space and matter – the river of time we live in is but a blink of an eye. With the Lord one day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years is like one day, 2 Peter 3:8.

He knew us before we were formed in the womb, Jeremiah 1:5. Your eyes have seen my unformed substance. And in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me when as yet there were not one of them. How precious also Your thoughts to me, O God! How vast is the sum of them, Psalm 139:16,17.

Our place in God is awesome for He knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. We have a special place in the heart of God, that is ours and ours alone – no one else can take it.

Jacob – Israel

Moses sang about Jacob who became Israel. He guarded him as the pupil/apple of His eye, Deuteronomy 21:10. Moses declared how God cared for Israel in the wilderness:

• He found them
• Instructed them
• Led them
• Kept them.

That is God’s preserving love and care during difficult seasons, Isaiah 43:2.

Chosen People

God is always with those He chooses and sets apart, 1 Peter 2:9. He cannot abandon His people and nothing comes to us that does not first pass through His hands, Job 1.

Fiery trials, 1 Peter 4:12, have a specific purpose in the life of a believer. According to the will of God.

Through the presence of the Holy Spirit we are made overcomers, Isaiah 40:31; Romans 8:37. We share everything that is Christ, as fellow heirs. Hid in Him, Colossians 3:3, – already seated in heavenly places in Christ, Ephesians 2:6.

Astonishing Value of Being the Apple of Gods Eye

The astonishing value of being the apple of Gods eye is to:

• Know you are chosen before the foundation of the world, Ephesians 1:4
• Know you are deep loved and valued – God’s own possession, 1 Peter 2:9
• Be aware of Gods attention always toward you
• Know His covenantal care surrounds you – the New Covenant.

All this because God makes you His dwelling place, John 14:23.

Our Privilege

Our privilege in being the apple of Gods eye is to:

• Have a deep desire to be protected
• Have a deep yearning to know the things of God, Psalm 42:1, 2,
• Fellowship Him intimately every day
• Treasure God’s wisdom
• Guard your heart and mind, Philippians 4:7
• Guard your spiritual perception – not be deceived
• Take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, 2 Corinthians 10:5
• Not swayed by circumstances
• Trust in the Lord with NOW faith Hebrews 11:1
• Fully focus on Him who is the name above all names, Philippians 2:9
• Be fully present in His awesome presence
• Have a New Covenant consciousness.

The Astonishing Value of Being the Apple of Gods Eye is knowing with absolute assuredness that you are what is closest to the heart of God and under His full protection. Live from your God-identity in divine awareness, for God is a Now God. Yesterday is gone and the unknown future is coming toward you.
