Why you need a unique and meaningful relationship with God is because it is the most important thing you can develop. However, only the few will pay the cost of walking walk this way, for a real relationship will cost you all of self.         

What is a Unique and Meaningful Relationship

A unique and meaningful relationship is about two parties genuinely knowing and accepting each other. They are valued and committed to one another beyond a surface-level connection. To walk in a real relationship with God starts at the Cross of Calvary, where Christ paid the debt for our sin, Colossians 2:13,14.  

This relationship is not emotional intensity alone but is developed through truth and trust. It requires full faith in a loving Heavenly Father, for without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11:6.  It is a contractual relationship where God made the way with God, John 14:6. This relationship allows believers to enter a covenant with Him through the shed blood of Christ.

Without the shedding of blood there is no remission of sin, Hebrews 9:22. God is a holy God. 1 Peter 1:16, and can have no unholy thing in His presence. Only those whose life is hid in Christ, Colossians 3:3, can dwell in the presence of a holy God.

Understanding who God is

Through constant study of the Word of God and prayer, we begin to develop an understanding of who God is in all His majesty, glory and vastness. Now we see through a glass dimly, 1 Corinthians 13:12, but through the indwelling Holy Spirit, John 14:7, we get glimpses of who God is and who we are.

God understands in a way that no person can understand. He knows our strengths, weaknesses, doubts, hopes and fears. He knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10.

We are limited to time, space and matter, but God is beyond all that, living only in the ‘Now’. He knows what we will be when we draw our last breath on earth and enter eternity. God knows whether we will press on toward the goal of our high calling in Christ Jesus, Philippians 3:14, and enter heaven richly. It is the Spirit of God who ever draws us into a unique and deep relationship with Him.

Vulnerability

God knows our total vulnerability and the battles we face each day. He knows what we need before we ask, Matthew 6:8. He does not judge us when we make mistakes, and nothing comes to us that God does not permit, Job 1. God alone is our relational and emotional security.

Fiery trials, 1 Peter 4:12-19, are designed with an eternal purpose, Romans 8:28. God said of Israel, I will refine them like silver and test them like gold. They will call on my name and I will answer them; I will say, they are my people,’ and they will say, The Lord is our God. Zechariah 13:9. It is through testing and trials that we learn to put our trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not to our own understanding, Proverbs 3:5. We cannot walk in God’s way by our own strength, but only through the enabling of the Holy Spirit, John 14:16.

Our security and confidence is in knowing that His word cannot return to Him without accomplishing what He says, Isaiah 55:11. He ever has our best interest at heart, for we are His own possession and precious to Him, 1 Peter 2:9. We hold a position in His kingdom that even the angels cannot hold, for Christ died for our redemption.

Endurance

God is the same yesterday, today and forever and changes not, Hebrews 13:8. It is His truth and integrity that gives purpose to our life. He desires to draw us into a unique and meaningful relationship with Him and indwell the believer, John 14:23.

You can only fill a glass by the amount you are prepared to empty it. That is the same in the spiritual realm. The challenge is to be empty of self and filled with all the fulness of Christ, Ephesians 1:23.

We can settle for just salvation, John 3:16, or we can be 30-fold or 60-fold in that relationship. The goal of true followers of Christ is to continue to aim to be 100-fold, Matthew 13:8. That entails giving up self-desire, ambition, and above all ego. Like Jesus, we should aim to do only the will of the Father, John 6:38.

Commitment

A unique and meaningful relationship with God involves remaining faithful to Him through all the seasons of life. Staying loyal to what is the truth as revealed in His word. He is faithful to us, 1 Timothy 2:13, so in turn we need to be faithful to Him and be firmly grounded in the Word of God.

Having the Word of the great I Am that I Am, Exodus 3:14, imprinted on the tablets of your heart, 2 Corinthians 3:3, is the way to come to a living knowledge of God. Led by the Holy Spirit your relationship will become whole, mature and loving. Iron sharpens iron, Proverbs 27:17, and only diamond can cut diamond. God is in the business of developing and growing our character after His likeness, Genesis 1:26,27.

The Relationship Costs

This relationship cost the Father the death of His Son, John 3:15. A cost the human mind cannot comprehend.

All He asks is that we receive Him and what Christ did at Calvary, and His indwelling Holy Spirit who searches the deep things of God, 1 Corinthians 2:10. God alone will take us to the heights that only He can offer us. Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, neither has entered into the heart of man, the things which God has prepared for them that love Him, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Be Fruitful

God desires that we be fruitful and multiply, Genesis 1:28. However, lasting fruit will only come from a unique and meaningful relationship with Him.

As we walk daily with Him, the fruit will develop naturally. Only the fruit of a unique relationship will cause us to enter heaven richly, 2 Peter 1:10,11, for that is the true outworking of faith. Being filled with the Holy Spirit, Ephesians 5:18, is not a one-time event, but an ongoing posture of dependence on a loving heavenly Father.

His Power for a Unique and Meaningful Relationship

You operate in the power of the God according to the depth of your unique and meaningful relationship with Him. The depth of the relationship we establish in our earthly journey is the only thing we will take to heaven.

The more you trust and depend on Him, the deeper the relationship will become. There is so much richness waiting for those who earnestly seek a unique and meaningful relationship with God. A relationship that uniquely reaches far into eternity.
