What happened in eternity past has amazing benefits to it. A subject that is almost beyond human comprehension.

Why Eternity Past

God is beyond time, space and matter – eternity is where God dwells. He is from everlasting to everlasting, Psalm 90:2.

Our name was written in eternity past, Revelation 17:8, and our unknowable future is known only by God. When we comprehend where we stand in God’s eternal plan, it alters everything – our perspective and our identity. 

 ‘Isn’t what we do each day the only thing of importance?’ The answer to that is Hebrews 11:1. ‘Now’ faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. It’s all about unmovable faith in our Creator.

In God, past, present and future are all rolled up in one in the generous present moment, for He is the Now God.

Understanding Eternity

Understanding eternity past changes how you:

•  See God
• See yourself
• Understand that you are God’s own possession, 1 Peter 2:9
• Look at time in the purpose of God and know what reality is.

You stop reacting to the temporary – time- and move into perceiving existence from God’s eternal perspective. Into the realm of the spirit and the mind of God – an incredible journey, filled with awe and mystery.

For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you a hope and a future, Jeremiah 29:11.

God Is Total

God is total in Himself, with no need for anything outside Himself. He created from His intention – not from need.

• Being is always before the fact
• Purpose existed before performance
• Intent existed before doing
• Creation is an overflow of Divine Love.

Humanity was created for a unique and meaningful relationship with God. Your security comes from knowing:

• He knew you before the world was formed
• Your true identity was always in the heart of God
• Your value is in Christ by divine intention.

Our Relationship with Time

Time is just a blink of an eye in the mind of God, 2 Peter 3:8. Time is the river we are flowing along – a God-ordained journey. Yes we have free will, but God knew what we would do before we were formed in our mother’s womb, Jeremiah 1:5.

Your eyes have seen my unformed substance. And in Your book were all written the days that were ordained for me when as yet there was not one of them. How precious are your thoughts to me O God. How vast is the sum of them Psalm 139:16,17. 

Time was always part of God’s eternal plan. The place where we either accept or reject His great gift of salvation, John 3:15. The place where we are fitted to be citizens of heaven – forever in the presence of a loving Heavenly Father.

Christ – The Eternal One

• Came from eternity
• Entered time in the form of human flesh, John 1:14
• Achieved the goal the Father set Him – our redemption
• Knew no sin – became sin on our behalf, 2 Corinthians 5:21
• Defeated death
• Rose and ascended back into eternity, Mark 16:19.
• The One who was and is and is to come, Revelation 1:8 – living in the Now.

Christ is the One who was and is and is to come, Revelation 1:8 – living in the Now. He:

Life Has Meaning

Life in Christ has meaning in terms of eternity:

• Nothing is random
• Everything has a purpose, Romans 8:28
• Creation is an overflow of Divine Love.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ he is a new creature. The old things passed away, behold, new things have come, 2 Corinthians 5:17.

• Yesterday is gone – the unknown future comes toward us – in God’s hand
• History moves inevitably towards restoration and fullness.

It is not about merely surviving time but participating every day in eternal reality. In Christ we are overcomers to the glory of God.

End to Time

Time will soon come to an end. Christ will rule for 1000 years from the New Jerusalem with the saints of God. Natural people will be born during that time. No longer will there be an infant who lives but a few days. Or an old man who does not live out his days, Isaiah 65:20. Then will come the reality of eternity once more — this is beyond human comprehension. A quick read of Ezekiel trying to describe the throne room of God proves this, Ezekiel 1.

Yet, eternity is in us now, through Christ — Father, Son and Holy Spirit indwell the believer, John 14:23. 

Spiritual Maturity

Because the eternal dwells in those who are followers of Christ we have the ability to:

• Look into the eternal past
• Enjoy the generous present moment – now
• Look to the eternal future as revealed in the Word of God.

That helps us to mature into the stature that belongs to the fulness of Christ, Ephesians 4:13, through:

• Patience
• Endurance
• Discernment
• Spiritual perspective.

Beyond the Veil

You learn to live with an open heart, seeing life from beyond the veil of our natural limitations. You rise into the heavenlies in worship of the great I Am that I Am, Exodus 3:14. Genuine worship that flows from revelation – not religious duty.

Worship is not only about singing or devotion when you look at life through the lens of eternity. You bring heaven down to earth, Matthew 6:10, and raise your earthly existence to the heavenly realm through the Divine Exchange. God gives to you that you might rise in authentic worship.

New Covenant

Each of the seven covenants of the Old Testament revealed different aspects of the eternal nature of God. All the covenants led to the New Covenant, first disclosed in Genesis 3:15.

Christ always was and is both the focus and Mediator, Hebrews 9:15, for He is the Lamb slain before the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8.

Christ is Redemption:

• Formed in eternity past
• Performed in time and
• Perfected in eternity.

As the Son of Man He:

• Fulfilled the eternal intention of God
• Gave fallen man the Truth and the Life, John 14:6
• Provided the Way for spiritual transformation
• Gives Born Again believers the ability to align with Divine Design.

To be transformed into a new creature under the New Covenant, 2 Corinthian 5:17, is to fulfil what was established in eternity past. It is not becoming something foreign but awakening to what was and is eternally true.

New Perception

What happened in eternity past:

• Frames who we would be, Psalm 139:16
•  Embraces what we are in the now
• Ensures what we will become.

It alters your perception of time and your place in it. God’s word is not only unchanging it is our security. So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth. It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire, and without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it, Isaiah 55:11.

What Happened in Eternity Past

Knowing what happened in eternity past foreshadows what will happen in the future. God always had an eternal plan just for you. Eternal reality is greater than time reality. Therefore, we are to:

• Live from permanence instead of chaos and instability
•  Lift up your head because your redemption is drawing near, Luke 21:28
• Live in the generous present moment where God is.

There is astonishing value and security in knowing the eternity past and looking to the eternal future, for God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. He has a special place for each one of us — no one else can take our place.
