Your inheritance in God is far greater than just receiving blessings. It is that which belongs to you because of your relationship with your Father.

Inheritance

An inheritance is what the beneficiary receives from the deceased estate:

• Property
• Titles
• Entitlements
• Privileges
• Rights
• Obligations and debts.

All this is detailed in minute detail by the laws of the land – the law of succession. The document bears the official seal of the court – probate – proving the validity of the will. 

Testament

A testament is a person’s will, especially the part relating to personal property. It is also something that serves as a sign or evidence of a specified fact, event, or quality.

Both the Old and the New Testament reveal the eight covenants of God.

• Edenic Covenant – Promise of what is to come, Genesis 1,2
• Adamic Covenant – where it all began, Genesis 3
• Noahic Covenant – God’s promise to the entire world, Genesis 8,9
• Abrahamic Covenant – Faith that changes everything, Genesis 12,15,17
• Palestinian Covenant – Land covenant, Deuteronomy 29,30
• Mosaic Covenant – The Law – God dwelling, Exodus 19-24
• Davidic Covenant – Kingdom covenant, 2 Samuel 7

These seven covenants all pointed and culminated in the New Covenant – the eternal covenant, that the great I Am that I Am, Exodus 3:14, formed with Himself through the death and resurrection of Christ. The Covenant of new life in the Kingdom of God and restored relationship.

Heavenly Inheritance

For there to be a heavenly inheritance, it required the:

• Lamb slain before the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8
• Institution of the law and the sacrificial system – Moses
• Death of the Son – Calvary
• Recipients to be forgiven and sealed by the Holy Spirit.

God – Our Inheritance

The inheritance of the child of God is not ‘something’ – it is God Himself. The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and my cup, Psalm 16:5.

God’s desire is to give Himself to His people, John 3:16. He is our inheritance and we are His inheritance, Psalm 33:12. His own precious possession, 1Peter 2:9, purchase with an incomprehendible price, 1 Corinthians 6:20.

Not only are believers fellow heirs with Christ, sharing in all that He is, Romans 8:17, the Father has qualified us to share in the eternal inheritance, Colossians 1:12. An inheritance that is the:

• Fullness of God’s promises
• Work of Christ – rescued us from the kingdom of darkness and transferred into the kingdom of light, Colossians 1:13
• Union with God in Christ
• Assurance – pledge of the Holy Spirit
• Adoption into the family of God, Ephesians 4:6 – calling God abba Father, Romans 8:15
• Reality of eternal life now – already seated in heavenly places through Christ, Ephesians 2:6.

The Principle

God cannot go against His word. In the Garden of Eden He told Adam that if he ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil he would in that day surely die, Genesis 2:7. Adam disobeyed God and spiritually died. God covered their nakedness by the first shedding of blood, Genesis 3:21.

Sin is forgiven through the shedding of blood. Though your sins are as scarlet, they will be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they will be like wool, Isaiah 1:18.

When we repent, our sins are forgiven through Christ’s shed blood and remembered no more, Psalm 103:12. God has ordained that our rightful dwelling place is under the blood-covered Mercy Seat in the Most Holy Place.

Set Apart

Our inheritance is that we were set aside as God’s own people – his possession, 1 Peter 1:20, before the foundation of the world. God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. He knows what choice we will make, for man has a free will to either reject or accept the great I Am that I Am, Exodus 3:14.

God is beyond time, space, and matter, living only in the ‘Now’. Yet, He chose to enter time in the form of a human being, John 1:14, to fulfill the law of God, Matthew 5:17-20. Christ was fully the eternal Son of God and fully the Son of Man.

Having legally satisfied the law through His death and resurrection He paid the price we could not pay. Christ then sent the Comforter, John 14:16-26 – the Holy Spirit of promise, given as the pledge/seal of our inheritance, Ephesians 1:14.

The Seal

Christ established the New Covenant and then returned to His eternal place of glory after 40 days. At fifty days the Holy Spirit descended, Acts 2, as He had promised. Fifty being the number of:

• Liberty
• Jubilee
• Total freedom as detailed in the Mosaic law.

In the year of Jubilee all land had to be returned to its original owner. At Calvary, Christ paid the price for humanity to be given the Way, John 14:6, to return to their rightful owner through a legal relationship – the New Covenant.

The pledge of the inheritance is the Holy Spirit, given to us as a down payment, Ephesians 1:14, 2 Corinthians 1:22. A pledge being something that is given for the fulfilment of a contract, or the payment of a debt.

The Holy Spirit indwells the saints of God, John 14:23, aiding and helping them to be overcomers to the glory of God. He groans in intercession for God’s people, Romans 8:26.

Living in Our Inheritance

In the natural, the inheritance becomes your property. Living in your heavenly inheritance includes:

• Living under God’s Rule – yielding all to Him – His possession, 1 Peter 1:20
• Operating in the authority of Christ
• Having Now faith, Hebrews 11:1
• Knowing His provision for all our needs
• Being a partner with God in His eternal purpose which He has prepared from the foundation of the earth.

Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard. And which have not entered the heart man. All that God has prepared for those who love Him, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Result

Living with a full awareness of our inheritance means we live a transformed life. Knowing:

• We are the righteousness of God
• We have peace that passes all understanding, Philippians 4:7
• The joy of the Holy Spirit
• How to live free from condemnation – Aware of full access to the awesome presence of God.

These are not rewards earned by performance, but gifts received through grace, having Now Faith, Ephesians 2:8.

Transformation and Glorification

Acknowledging our inheritance is to mature into the stature of the image that belongs to the fulness of Christ, Ephesians 4:13. For when Christ appears, we shall be like Him 1 John 3:2.

God’s purpose is not merely to forgive us, but to transform us into the likeness of His Son through a unique relationship with Him.

Imperishable Inheritance

Earthly inheritances can be lost or stolen, but our inheritance in Christ is secure and eternal, 1 Peter 1:4. Nothing in this life diminishes what God has reserved for His children.

Your inheritance is your identity, living in full awareness of the indwelling presence of God. A relationship that is all about the:

• Father’s undying love
• Authority of the Son
• Indwelling Holy Spirit.

How to Know your Inheritance in God

Knowing your inheritance in God results in you being:

• In union with Christ – you have died and your life is hid in Him, Colossians 3:3
• Led by the Holy Spirit
• Aware that you have full access to the throne of grace
• Conscious of the fullness of the life of the Kingdom of God
• Daily transformed into the likeness of Christ, Ephesians 4:13
• In eternal fellowship with God Now.

Inheritance is not what God gives, but who God is – every part of the inheritance flows from that reality. God gives Himself to us and we give ourself to Him. A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people for God’s own possession so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvellous light, 1 Peter 2:9.
