How to know your identity is not complicated and it is not about inventing something new. It is awakening to who you are beneath the noise, expectations of your numerous roles. The foundation that quietly shapes everything about you, for you are totally unique.

What is Identity

Identity is found in what is constant. It is not a nice idea about yourself or something you get. It’s something you recognize, choose and consistently live from.

True identity is not the outward roles you fulfil, but what remains when you are still and alone with God. It is the truth that is deep inside you. The place where you make decisions that are consistent with your values and aspirations in God. For your identity begins in the great I Am That I Am, Exodus 3:14.

Two Identities

You have two forms of identity. One identity develops over time through a combination of conditioning influences. This comes from:

• Life experiences
• Environment – family, culture, upbringing
• Feedback from others – what is spoken over you
• Beliefs you have accepted
• Conclusions you have formed about yourself
• Labels you have adopted to survive or succeed. 

These are a default identity often formed through misunderstanding, pain, and other people’s limitations. People who are operating through the lens of their own concept of what they believe their identity is.

The Second Identity

However, there is another identity – the deliberately chosen identity. This identity is about accepting who you are in God according to the Word of God.

• It is revealed – not constructed
• Awakened to – not something you are becoming
• Aligned with truth – knowing the Word of God.
•  Not self-defined – nor past defined.

An identity that is foreordained, for God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. He knew you from before you were in your mother’s womb, Jeremiah 1:5. The truth is that you are known before you are seen and defined before you act.

You were created with intention. Your name was written in the Book of Life from before the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8.

Free Will

God gave man a free will, so knowing your true identity begins with a choice. Whether or not you choose to live through the grace of God, as a true follower of Jesus Christ, empowered by the Holy Spirit. Whether or not you accept that in Christ you are a new creature, old things passed away, behold new things are come, 2 Corinthians 5:17.

Even when you are going through fiery trials, 1 Peter 4:12, you have a choice. For God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God. To those who are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28. What Satan meant for evil, God turns to good, Genesis 50:20.

Driving Force

Your identity is the driving force of your life – your behaviour flows naturally from it. Therefore, what are the patterns of your life that reveal your underlying identity – the real you?

They act like a filter. When you act out of real identity, it expands and your capacity to do things follows.

Your identity develops through a combination of influences:

• What I believe about myself
• Where that belief comes from
• What I think about myself lining up with the Word of God?

Know that most of our limitations are not external – they are identity based.

Stability

To know and live your true identity is to know stability. It’s what you return to again and again. External pressures do not cause you to reinvent yourself.

Identity then acts like a filter – giving meaning to everything. Living from your real identity builds healthy boundaries.

When you make the choice to act out of real identity, your identity expands and your capacity to do things follows. Nothing will be impossible with God, Luke 1:37.

Transformation

Real transformation occurs only when you know and live from your true identity. You have died and your life is now hidden with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3.

It is not about behaviour modification, which is surface, but a deep inner knowing of who you are in God. The effort is to align with who you really are, according to the Word of God. Learning to consistently live beyond the veil in the New Covenant, in the intense presence of your loving Heavenly Father.

Living Beyond the Veil

To live beyond the veil is to know you are whole, body, soul and spirit, 1 Thessalonians 5:23. You are not just a body, for you carry light, presence and awareness. You no longer live from:

• Lack
• Time bound thinking – past or future
• External approval from others
• Darkness the absence of light – misconceived perception.

Designed for Union with God

Christ is the Way, the Truth and the Life, John 14:6. Only in Him can we discover our true identity. You were designed for union and relationship with a holy God, not separation through sin. You were designed to worship God.

To yield every part of your life to Him is to fulfil who you truly are. He has a way for you that is unknown to you. Things which the eye has not seen and ear has not heard. And which have not entered the heart of man. All that God has prepared for those who love Him, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

To live beyond the veil is to live consistently in the generous present now, for God is beyond time, space and matter. Yesterday is gone and your unknown future is coming toward you. God operates only in the Now, where you are fully united with Him. Even when you were dead in your transgressions, He made us alive together with Christ and raised us up with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, Ephesians 2:6.  

Living Your True Identity

Identity becomes real when you live by:

• Aligning every thought, 2 Corinthians 10:5, to the Word of God
• Make decisions based on the deep desire to do only the will of God.

Like Jesus, earnestly claim, Let your will be done, not mine, Luke 22:42. Particularly when you find yourself in a hard place, for your loving Heavenly Father only wants the very best for you.

Choose to live from your true identity of who you are in God. Claim and live by the promises God has given in His Word.

Knowing Your True Identity

Authority, purpose and perception flow from where you dwell and who you are in that place. Standing in your true identity is to:

• Operate in authority – not strive
• Align with power – not attempt to control
• Rest and influence – not try to force through effort.

Knowing your true identity in Christ, is to live as a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people for God’s own possession, 1 Peter 2:9. You are not your own, you were bought with a price, 1 Corinthians 6:220, that is beyond our comprehension. The reality is that you are a child of God and fellow-heir with Christ, Romans 8:17.

Identity Declaration

“I am not defined by what I see, feel, or experience, or is said about me. I am defined by truth – God’s truth that never changes. Christ is my Absolute Reference Point and I choose to live aligned with God – whole in my being and clear in my identity. I express that reality through every part of my life. I am totally unique and choose to live in Him in covenantal relationship.”

Many are called but few are chosen, Matthew 22:34.
