The Old Testament speaks about the ‘night watches’ where several significant events took place during the hours of darkness. Sometimes the darkest hours became the setting for unexpected encounters with God.

Understanding the night watches encourages us spiritually. Darkness does not mean God is absent – He is still at work.

The night may not yet be over, but dawn is coming.

The Night Watch Spiritually

Most of us are familiar with waking in the early hours of the morning, not sure what has awakened us.

Not every nighttime awakening has a specific spiritual meaning, but it can be a powerful part of our spiritual journey, particularly when all seems to be darkness.

The principle of ‘present faith’ is particularly relevant in the dark seasons. We can only trust and obey God in the present moment. The past is gone and the future is in His hands.

Abraham and Night Watches

Abraham, the friend of God, James 2:23, experienced several significant events that began in the night watch.

He rose early in the morning and looked toward the place where Sodom and Gomorrah had stood, Genesis 19:27-28. He saw the result of the judgement God had warned him about.

God’s word shall not return to Him empty, but will accomplish what He desires, Isaiah 55:11.

Other Early Mornings

Abraham again rose early in the morning to send Hagar and Ishmael into the wilderness, Genesis 21:14. Abraham loved his son – yet he obeyed God.

This was only a foretaste of what was yet to come. God prepares us step by step – order on order, line upon line. A little here, a little there, Isaiah 28:10.

In another heart-breaking incident, Abraham rose early to begin the journey to Mount Moriah, where he was to offer his other son, Isaac, as a sacrifice,Genesis 22:3.

This would be the  greatest test of faith recorded in Scripture and prophetic of the death of the Son of God.

Abraham’s Obedience

Each of these incidents were shrouded in:

• Sorrow
• Uncertainty and darkness
• Profound testing

Yet, Abraham obeyed God, no matter the cost.

‘Now faith’ means obeying God even when we cannot see what He is doing, Hebrews 11:1.

Abraham believed that God was able to raise Isaac from the dead, Hebrews 11:19.

That is a powerful hope for every believer who stands beside the grave of a loved one. God is faithful and will not allow us to be tempted, or tried, beyond what we are able, 1 Corinthians 10:13.

God Has a Purpose

Abraham could not see the whole picture, but he trusted God enough to take the next step, for God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10.

Scripture never promises that following God will be easy. Jesus said If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me’, Luke 9:23.

We are told to not be amazed when fiery trials come our way, 1 Peter 4:12. God has an eternal purpose and provision for every situation.

Jacob Wrestles Until Daybreak  – Genesis 32

Jacob also knew what it was to experience a long and difficult night.

He was terrified about meeting his brother Esau after many years of separation, for he was unsure of Esau’s attitude.

Having made preparations for the encounter, Jacob was finally alone.

A mysterious ‘Man’ wrestled with him until daybreak.

Jacob refused to let go without receiving a blessing. He was exhausted and his hip had been dislocated, yet he continued to cling to the One with whom he wrestled.

Then morning came.

New Name

Jacob was not the same man who had entered the battle the night before. His name was associated with ‘supplanter’, ‘usurper’, ‘deceiver’.

When Jacob encountered God he received a new name, Israel. The meaning – ‘You have striven with God and with men and have prevailed’.

This encounter also became significant for the nation that would come from Jacob’s descendants, Genesis 49.

Transformation

The dark night became a place of transformation.

Often God’s deepest work in us is during life’s night seasons.

The night may be devastating, but it is important to:

• Persevere
• Hold on to God’s Word
• Exercise present faith until the morning comes.

Deliverance at the Red Sea – Exodus 14

Another significant event occurred when the Israelites found themselves trapped between the Red Sea and the advancing Egyptian army. Yet, it became the scene of a miraculous deliverance.

God divided the sea and created a pathway for His people. The waters were like a wall, towering over them on their right and on their left, Exodus 14:22.

Then, at the morning watch, God looked down on the Egyptian army through the pillar of fire and cloud, Exodus 14:24.  He threw the Egyptians into confusion and made their chariots difficult to drive.

God Intervenes

God told Moses to stretch out his hand over the sea. The waters flowed back, completely overwhelming the Egyptian army. Israel continued their walk on dry land.

What often looks like the end of the road, may be the place God opens a way. The door God opens no one can shut and the door He shuts no one opens, Revelation 3:7.

The darkness may make it impossible to see the way forward, but God already has the way. What Satan designs for evil, God will use for good, Romans 8:28.

Samuel – 1 Samuel 3

Then there is another significant event during the night watches.

The lamp of God, that burned from evening to morning in the sanctuary, had not yet gone out, when God called the young boy, Samuel, who was lying in the temple.

Hearing someone call his name, Samuel went to the priest Eli. This happened three times before Eli realised the Lord was calling the boy.

The next time Samuel heard his name, he answered according to Eli’s instruction, ‘Speak for your servant is listening’.

Significant Timing

Israel was experiencing severe spiritual darkness and moral decline, particularly among its leadership. The nation was also under pressure from surrounding enemies.

In the midst of this darkness God raised up a young prophet, for the period of the judges was drawing to a close.

Samuel’s ministry, from 40 – 60 years long, became instrumental in Israel’s transition to the monarchy. He would eventually anoint both Saul and David.

As one season draws to an end, God may already be preparing us for what comes next.

The question is:

• How strong is our relationship with the Lord
• Do we have ears to hear and a heart willing to obey?

David and the Night Watches – Psalm 63:6

David also understood the spiritual value of night watches. When I remember You on my bed, I meditate on You in the night watches. He was in a covenant relationship with God.

The night was not simply a period of darkness. It was a time to remember God and meditate on:

• His presence,
• His character and
• His Word.

Rather than just analysing facts, or accumulating knowledge about Him, the night watches can become a time of deep fellowship with Him.

We often receive an entirely different perspective when we slow down and meditate on Scripture.

Our Night Watch

The night watch needs to be a place where our focus turns from the darkness around us, to the God who is with us, John 14:23.

A place to:

• Be spiritually alert
• Pray continuously, 1 Thessalonians 5:17
• Intercede for others
• Stand faithfully in the place God has called us to.

A Final Word

Understanding the night watches can give us a biblical perspective for those seasons when life feels dark, uncertain or demanding and the way ahead seems scary.

The night may be long, and you seldom understand what is happening, but God is present in every situation.

Scripture repeatedly reminds us that God is at work even when we cannot see what He is doing.

The darkness does not have the final word. The dawn is coming, Psalm 30:5.
