The expression ‘Now Faith’ is one I frequently use, because it captures something essential to the life of faith. To understand its power, we first need to discover the nature of faith itself.
The Assurance of Things Hoped For
The Bible says ‘Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen’, Hebrews 11:1.
That says faith is a present certainty concerning God’s promises. It is the confident assurance that what God has spoken cannot return to Him empty, without first accomplishing what He desires, Isaiah 55:11. This is another example of the fact existing before it is seen.
God never makes empty promises. His covenant with Israel beautifully illustrates this certainty, Exodus 6:5-8.
Repeated Pattern
For those of you who enjoy the symbolism of bible numerics, notice the repeated pattern:
- Two times, ‘I have’ – two the number of witness
- Three times, ‘I Am’- three the number of perfect witness and the Godhead
- Seven times, ‘I will’ – seven the number of spiritual perfection and the completion of God’s eternal purpose.
Because God is faithful, our part is to seek His will, trust His promises, and receive by faith what He has already prepared.
The Nature of Faith
Many people understand faith but overlook the significance of now faith. The emphasis is not only on the now, but the nature of ever present faith.
God dwells eternally in the now. Therefore, genuine faith operates in the present. Yesterday’s faith cannot sustain the walk of today and tomorrow’s faith cannot be borrowed.
- The past belongs to memory
- The future belongs to hope.
To live in either of these is to live outside the present, instead of the place where faith operates.
Faith lives in the richness of the present now, where every moment has eternal value, when lived in union with Christ.
The Eternal God
Moses asked God what His name was. God answered, I Am the I Am, Exodus 3:14.
Scripture never describes God as ‘I Will Be’, or ‘I Was’. While He is Lord over history, the present, and all eternity, He reveals Himself as the ever present I Am.
Following the thousand-year reign of Christ on earth and His final judgement, time as we know it will give way to the eternal Day of God. The succession of earthly ages will be complete, and God’s people will dwell forever in His eternal presence.
The Three Omnis
Theologians often describe God’s nature using three words:
- Omnipotent– All powerful
- Omnipresent – Present everywhere
- Omniscient – Knowing all things
All three are the present now.
Because God dwells outside the limitations of time, He perfectly knows and declares the end from before the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. This helps us understand Paul’s teaching on God’s foreknowledge and predestination, Romans 8:29–30. Every moment of history, the present and the future, lies fully open before Him, all happening at the same time.
The Place Where God Meets Us
In the abundant present moment God abundantly gives us everything we need for this moment.
Although God rules over everything, we only ever encounter Him in the now.
Jesus reflected this when He said, Do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own, Matthew 6:34.
Faith and Grace
The present moment is the meeting place between God’s grace and our faith in Him.
Grace says ‘I have provided’. Faith responds ‘I receive’.
It is much like receiving a gift. Someone has already purchased it, wrapped it up, and offered it to you. Faith simply reaches out and accepts what grace has already prepared.
The Generous Present Moment
Every present moment is generous because God continually fills it with His presence. His mercies are new every morning, Lamentations 3: 22. His grace is sufficient, 2 Corinthians 12:9.
God never asks us to live on yesterday’s supply, or tomorrow’s possibilities. He provides today’s grace for today’s journey.
Leaving Regret and Offense Behind
Many people remain imprisoned by yesterday. They continually revisit:
- Failures
- Missed opportunities
- Painful memories
- Offences
- Disappointments.
You cannot rewrite yesterday, but the blood of Christ has already dealt with it. Faith receives His forgiveness now, so freedom is always found in the present moment.
Escaping Anxiety of the Future
Others become trapped by fears about tomorrow. They are bound by: What if…, Suppose…. What would I do if…..
Yet, no one can live in the future, even though it is coming towards you.
Faith remains anchored in the One who is eternally present. Whatever tomorrow brings, God is already there. Now faith quietly says, God will bring me through.
Faith alone pleases God, Hebrews 11:6, and is where:
- His wisdom is available
- His peace is available
- His strength is available.
The True Power of Now Faith
The true power of now faith lies in walking each moment with God. The place where every moment becomes an opportunity to trust God in everything and establish an eternal relationship with Him.
These men walked with God:
- Enoch
- Noah
- Abraham – called the friend of God, James 2:23
- David
- Jesus continually withdrew aside to be alone with His Father.
The psalmist said it so beautifully. He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High – the secret place – will abide in the shadow of the Almighty, Psalm 91:1.
Walking with God is much like taking a natural walk. You move one step at a time and keep your eyes fixed on the path before you.
That means keeping your eyes on the One who redeemed you. The author and perfector or your faith, Hebrews, 12:2. Always remember, that focused conscious awareness handles complex thoughts sequentially – one thought at a time. So focus your thoughts on Him.
Living Without Fear
Because Christ has opened the way into God’s presence Hebrews 10:19-22, there is no longer any need to hide behind masks or veils.
- Your identity is secure in Him
- The regret of the past no longer defines you
- The fear of the future no longer controls you.
Every present moment becomes an invitation to:
- Recognize God’s presence
- Receive His grace
- Respond in faith, Ephesians 2:8,9
- Rest in His peace that passes all understanding, Philippians 4:6,7
- Walk in a deeper relationship with Him.
Yesterday is covered by His mercy.
Tomorrow is held within His sovereign care.
Today is where faith lives.
Final Thought on the Power of Now Faith
Now faith is the open hand that receives everything the great I AM desires to give in the generous present moment.
Transformation takes root, peace flourishes, and abundant life is experienced.
