What is the Power of the Word – Life or Death?5 min read

What is the power of the Word that has both an everyday, as well as a spiritual sense? It has the power of life or death.

The Word of God is the most powerful force in the entire universe. Without the Word of God, the universe would not even exist, for the Word creates.

The Power of Words

The mystical power of words lies in their ability to transcend barriers, connect people, and shape the world in profound and complex ways. Words inspire, educate, motivate, comfort, and connect people. They inspire, heal, educate and are tools of creativity.

We must never underestimate the power of words for their effect is multifaceted and profound. Words influence perceptions, emotions, actions, thoughts, and relationships. The power of words is that they can build up or utterly destroy, through economic, relational, or social values. Words can convey complex ideas, evoke strong emotions, and drive change.

Whatever way we use our gift of words, they create a lasting legacy long after they are uttered. The problem is that a word once spoken is like an arrow in flight, or time. These three things cannot be retrieved.

The Power of God’s Word

God’s Word is powerful for its foundation is God Himself in all His attributes, for God is what He says He is in all His infinity and majesty. The Word of God influences every aspect of human existence, whether a person accepts or disbelieves in the existence of God.

It was the spoken word of God that brought about all creation, Genesis 1, and holds the universe together. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God, John 1:1. Nothing exists outside the Word of God, Colossians 1:16-17. All too often people underestimate the power of the Word of God, yet it is that Word that will judge all mankind, John 12:48.

Word Became Man

God chose, in His sovereignty to reveal Himself to men in human form, Jesus Christ. The Word, the great I Am Who I Am, became flesh and amazingly dwelt among men, John 1:14.

Through His death and resurrection the Word provided the way for fallen man to be redeemed and return to a covenantal relationship with their Creator. Sinful man who deserved only death, was given the way to eternal life, John 3:16.

Life or Death

The word has the power to bring life or death, Proverbs 18:21. What you keep telling yourself will become fact, for words have the power to change your way of thinking.

Jesus said His words are spirit and life, John 6:63. The Antichrist’s words will be spirit and death, for what we do with the Word of God will determine our eternal destination.

After Jesus had fasted for 40 days, Satan taunted Him with misquoted Words of God, Matthew 4:1-11. Jesus then used the Word of God to defeat Satan. Followers of Jesus have the same authority Jesus had and correctly using the Word of God causes demons to flee, James 4:7

God’s Word is Spirit

Jesus said, If a man love Me he will keep my words and my Father will love him. And we will come unto him and make our abode with him, John 14:23. God’s word is spirit and the Spirit of God indwells the believer.

God gave Moses the written Law on tablets of stone, Deuteronomy 4:13. Christ’s followers are to write the Word of God on the tablet of the heart, Proverbs 3:6. God’s Word is the power of the believer, for His word is true and faithful, John 17:17. It is only the stupidity of arrogant man who twists the Word of God to his own interpretation, the way Satan did in the Garden of Eden.

By the mouth of two or three witnesses the matter shall be established, Deuteronomy 19:15. This same principle applies to all interpretation of God’s Word, for there are always more than one reference to any true spiritual concept.

Rightly Handling the Word of God

Followers of Christ are exhorted to study to shew yourself approved unto God. A workman who does not need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth, 2 Timothy 2:15. There are people who use the Word of God to fulfil their own mistaken goals and ambitions. Yet, the day will come when such people will be judged by the Word, John 12:48.

It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search it out, Proverbs 25:2. Christ’s followers are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, 1Peter 2:9. They have the privilege of digging out the golden nuggets of truth from the Word of God. The bible is a living Word and no matter how many times you read it, there are always more golden nuggets to find. This is part of what makes Christianity unique.

God’s Word is Eternal

The ultimate power of the word is that God’s Word is eternal. God lives in the ever-present now and is always speaking. Having spoken His Word cannot be altered. It goes on into infinity.

God speaks and it is. So shall My Word be that goes forth from My mouth. It shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it, Isaiah 55:11.

Never underestimate the power of the Word of God, for what He says, He will do. Let your the power of your word show who you are, for you are unique.
