What is the Importance of Standard of Measure6 min read

The importance of standard of measure is a spiritual principle we should never underestimate. By your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return, Luke 6:38. Therefore, we need to understand what a standard of measure is.

Standard of Measure

Standard of measure refers to an established unit or system that ensures uniformity and accuracy in measurement. We use standard of measure over and over, creating stability in everyday life.

This involves everything that uses length, mass, time, temperature, or volume for physical measurement standards. Then there is the standard of measure in currency or efficiency such as the value of a coin or miles per gallon. Manufacturing, industry and science all operate on a standard of measure.

Then we turn to the Bible and find the greatest standard of measure in who God is. The great I Am That I Am, Exodus 3:14 who never changes. He is the same yesterday, today and forever, Hebrews 13:8. He is not like humans who change their mind minute by minute.

Uniformity and Consistency

We can count on God’s faithfulness, mercy, love and justice for He never changes. All that God is, never alters.

This means that we can rely not only on Him, but that Christianity has a standard of measure that cannot be altered. As humans, we can twist and distort the ways of God to suit our own wants and desires, but that does not make it fact. All the odd ideas you find in religion are man-made, not God originated. They are man’s attempt to make God fit into man’s way of thinking.

Jesus said, heaven and earth will pass away but My words will not pass away, Matthew 24:35. So will My word be which goes forth from My mouth. It will not return to Me empty, without accomplishing what I desire. And without succeeding in the matter for which I sent it, Isaiah 55:12.

Guarantees Fairness

Standard of measure guarantees fairness. God is a righteous judge in all matters, Psalm 5:11, both naturally and spiritually. That statement causes some to throw their hands up in protest. How can God allow disasters to happen, or send people to hell?

God is a just God, His work is perfect, for all His ways are justice, Deuteronomy 32:4. God gave man a free will and those who reject Him, must in turn be rejected.

Fiery Trials

It is only through the cleansing fiery trials of life that the follower of Christ learns to grow into the fullness of the stature that belongs to Jesus Christ, Ephesians 4:13. Only in the depths of fiery trials do we come to an end of ourselves.

What Satan designs for the destruction of everything that belongs to God, God turns to good, Genesis 50:20. Through the cleansing fiery trials of life the follower of Christ learns to grow into the fullness of the stature that belongs to Jesus Christ, Ephesians 4:13.

Guarantees Exactness

Science, research, development and medicine all require the exactness of a standard of measure, to ensure a good result. Imagine if there were no exact measurements to dosages of medication.

Imagine if there was no standard of measurement to the height of a seat or the height of a door. Have you ever sat on a seat that was mis-measured? These are examples of standard of measurement that we use many times a day.

People are horrified when they discover they have a counterfeit note in their hands that has no value. Money needs an accepted value to be of any use.

Guarantees Safety

We drive a motor car expecting it to be up to the standard of measurement. We step onto an aeroplane with the same expectation. You go to a doctor confident that he or she is who her qualifications claim. All this gives us a sense of safety.

Children should be able to have the same sense of safety from their parents. Spiritually we have safety in that our Heavenly Father is the same all the time and that His word is true.

Faith Alone

Faith is a gift from God, Ephesians 2:8.  It is faith in God’s unchangeability that guarantees our piece of mind.

The Christian journey is based on faith and faith alone. Faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen, Hebrews 11:1.

Without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11:6. We believe in eternal life as God promised, John 3:16, by faith. The unbeliever would not accept this even if a resurrected person knocked on their door, Luke 16:11.

God Gave His Son

There has risen a large following in the Christian community that says that you need to give to get. They call it sowing a seed of faith. That should never be our standard of measure for giving.

God did not give His Son to ‘get’. The result of Adam sinning was that death entered the entire human race for the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23.

God gave His Son to provide the Way back to fellowship with Himself. Only through the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ can fallen man have the choice of eternal death or eternal life, John 3:16.

God Gave Freely

God did not give to get for He is total within Himself. He has no need of the created for He created for His own pleasure. It is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure, Philippians 2:13. Giving is the heart of the Father.

However, God takes pleasure when we give with an open heart, not looking for approval or a return on our efforts. The pleasure we get from freely giving, or praying, reading the bible or serving others should be our reward. We should give as the equal and opposite reaction to what Christ has done for us.

The greatest action of giving and receiving, should be when we give our life wholly to our Lord and Saviour. We give up self and receive all the blessings God has for us, that is beyond our imagination, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Equal and Opposite Reaction

Newton’s Third Law of Motion states that for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. Every action has a corresponding reaction force in the opposite direction. When God gave His Son to pay the penalty for sin, the equal and opposite reaction is that millions of souls would be saved and receive eternal life. It is called the Divine Exchange.

The Creator is not indebted to the created. However, Give, and it will be given to you. They will pour into your lap a good measure. Pressed down shaken together and running over. For by your standard of measure it will be measured to you in return, Luke 6:38. The more we give out, the more God pours back in, for God does not give His children a stone when they ask for bread, Matthew 7:9-11. One who is gracious to a poor man lends to the Lord. And He will repay him for his good deed, Proverbs 19:17.

Standard of Measure

Our standard of measure is God Himself. He is our guarantee. What He says in His word will come to pass, both in blessing and in judgement. Standard of measure is what makes Christianity unique.
