What is the Valley of Tears6 min read

The valley of tears is a translation of Psalm 84. Passing through the valley of Beca, tears, they make it a spring. Every valley of tears has a purpose in God.

The early rain also covers it with blessings. They go from strength to strength. Every one of them appears before God in Zion, Psalm 84:6, 7.

Book of Tears

A W Tozer wrote, The Bible was written in tears and to tears it will yield its best treasures. The truth of this statement is seen in even a quick look at the people of the Bible.

How often did Adam look towards the Garden of Eden in his 930 years, with tears streaming down his face? He knew the fulness of what he had lost, with all its pain and suffering to creation.

What did Joseph discover in prison when it seemed everyone had forgotten him, Genesis 39? Daniel’s long season of fasting and prayer brought Gabriel from heaven to tell him the secret of the centuries, Daniel 8 and 9. Jeremiah, the weeping prophet, warns Israel again and again of her coming captivity, even though they couldn’t hear him.

New Testament Tears

The shortest verse in the Bible is Jesus wept, John 11:35. He wept not just for His friends, for in a few moments Lazarus wou7ld walk out, free of the grave. He wept for how disobedience to God’s word caused the agony of the world through sin. For the wages of sin are death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 6:23.

The suffering of the Garden of Gethsemane was revealed in His sweat falling as great drops of blood, Luke 22:44. Calvary was a dark place of weeping. Mary Magdalene was weeping when the risen Lord appeared to her, John 20:11-18.

Paul and Silas began praising God after suffering agony for many hours, Acts 16:25,26. Suddenly the Lord answered them. John loudly wept because he could find no one to open the seven-sealed book, Revelation 5:4.

Top Angel

Lucifer was the most beautiful angel in God’s heaven, Isaiah 14, until sin was found in his heart, Ezekiel 28:15. He was cast out taking one third of the angels with him, Revelation 12:4. He became the prince of the power of the air, Ephesians 2:2, and god and of this world, 2 Corinthians 4:4.

Lucifer desired rulership, but he merely became the ruler of this world, John 12:31. From the beginning, God made it clear that Satan would have a finite rule, Genesis 3:15. His end was predestined to be the lake of fire, Revelation 20:10.

Satan knows his time is limited, but his aim is to attempt to destroy everything that is God’s own possession. God’s people are directly in the firing line for they are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for His own possession, 1 Peter 2:9.

Failure or Not

Calvary looked as if it was a total failure. The child born to be king, Isaiah 9:6, ended up cruelly mocked, beaten and whipped and hung on a wooden cross as the worst sort of criminal. It seemed the arch-enemy of God had won. How Satan and his hordes of fallen angels would have rejoiced.

Calvary is the place that reveals the true product of fiery trials. No man could undergo what Jesus Christ went through when He died in our place and took our judgement, John 3:16. It was the only way, John 14:6, we could be reinstated as true sons of God and enter back into an even better relationship with God, than Adam once had.

Total Victory

The heavens would have echoed to the demonic shouts of victory when they saw the broken body laid in an empty tomb and a stone rolled across the entrance. For three days and nights they would have had a hallelujah party. Finally, the Messiah God had promised in Genesis 3:15, was dead.

Yet, the prophecy was clear. There was always going to be the morning of the third day when the resurrected Jesus Christ walked free. He was the ultimate overcomer, having conquered death and sin once and for all, 1 Peter 3:18. The spiritual principle was established for all eternity.

Tempered

In the natural world we see the tempering of steel, gold purified by fire and carbon turned into a diamond through intense pressure. First the natural then the spiritual, 1 Corinthians 15:46. The refining pot is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tests hearts, Proverbs 17:3.

The fiery trials of this life play an important role in how we will stand in heaven. What we become on earth is what we take to heaven. We can be Outer Court Christians who merely receive salvation but go no further with Christ.

Or, we are the Christians who become saints by character and enter the Tabernacle and dwell in the Holy Place or in the Most Holy Place. These are the ones who know this life is merely a testing ground for the great things God has in store for the believer, 1 Corinthians 2:9.

Fiery Trials

All true believers of Christ know the valley of Beca, for fiery trials play a special and continuing role in the purification, refining and maturing of the saints of God, Ephesians 4:13. In the hard times we learn what it is to truly depend on God with all our heart, mind and strength.

Beloved do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you. To the degree that you share the sufferings of Christ, keep on rejoicing, so that also at the revelation of His glory you may rejoice with exultation. 1 Peter 4:12, 13.

Weakness in the Valley of Tears

In our weakness we are made strong. This sounds like a paradox that couldn’t possibly happen. The truth is the saints of God have always found strength in times of weakness. Paul cried to God concerning something that was troubling him. God replied, My grace is sufficient for you, for power is perfected in weakness, 2 Corinthians 12:9,10.

We are faced with our own mortality and the reality of how limited we are. When we come to end of our own abilities, the fulness of God’s power, mercy and love come to the rescue. It is the trial of our faith that glorifies God, 1 Peter 4:12-19.

However, we do not go through the trials of life alone, for God is always with us and He knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. Every trial has a divine purpose. That which Satan devises for evil, God turns to good, Genesis 50:20. We need to lift our head for our redemption draws nigh, Luke 21:28.

Valley of Tears

Our tears are precious to God, and are recorded, Psalm 56:8. We weep for ourselves and must weep for others.

We draw close to the fulfilment of end-time prophecies and darkness surrounds us. Yet our hope shines brighter as we wait for that trumpet call of God. The dead in Christ will rise and we who are alive and remain will be caught up with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we shall always be with the Lord, 1 Thessalonians 4:3. Our mourning will be turned to glorious rejoicing, Psalm 30:11,12, and the valley of tears long forgotten when we see our Lord face to face.
