Understanding how to be an overcomer puts you in the elite minority of one. It is something only you can achieve for yourself. It is your God-appointed position.

Overcoming is a Choice

Man’s natural drive is to succeed for one’s own glory, yet all have sinned and come short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23, and deserve eternal and justified separation from a righteous and holy God. As a follower of Christ we live in a world that is under the control of Satanic influence. Overcoming is something we need to strive to be, just as Jesus lived on earth and overcame.

God, in His grace and mercy gave man a free will and the option of choosing between good and evil. To be an overcomer is to succeed in dealing with, or gaining control of a particular problem or difficulty. Natural man has the problem of being separate from His Creator, because of sin.

Why Overcome

The journey through this life is one of learning to overcome from the moment we are born to the moment we die. The first two obstacles are learning to speak and to walk. After that there is constant stream of situations we have to learn to overcome.

Again and again we have to find the inner strength to face whatever life throws at us. Deciding to quit is not an option, as there is far more to gain from being an overcomer. The secret is that overcoming develops inner strength and fortitude based on our complete faith and trust in a loving Heavenly Father, who gave His only Son to pay the price to redeem us, John 3:16.

The Enemy

There is never a time when we don’t need to overcome. Some trials are easy, while others are fiery trials requiring unbelievable amounts of fortitude. Yet, it is in the depths that we discover who we really are.

Undergirding it all is the absolute necessity of total trust in God, for faith alone pleases God, Hebrews 11:6. We do not have the mental strength or fortitude to go it alone, for the real battle is in the spiritual against the spiritual forces of wickedness in heavenly places, Ephesians 6:12. Satan’s one goal is to stop the sons of God from being an overcomer.

Keys to How to be an Overcomer

Goal setting plays a major role in succeeding, but the goal needs to be realistic. What is the point of yearning to be a multi-millionaire when I can barely pay day-to-day expenses. We all need to dream, but maybe saving $100 could be the first goal, before moving on to higher goals.

To succeed in overcoming is to learn from our mistakes. Eddison had 1,000 failures before he finally produced a successful light bulb. It takes tenacity and patience to succeed.

Our body and soul require education and careful consideration. Some people are more skillful than others, but we all have the ability to succeed, provided we choose to not quit.

There are numerous self-help tips on how to succeed, yet the most important key to it all, is to aim to be an overcomer despite any situation we find ourselves in. Paul wrote, I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am in, Philippines 4:11. His contentment came from His unmovable and personal relationship with his Creator. That is the real secret on being an overcomer.

Promises to the Overcomer

The beloved Apostle John wrote eight promises for the overcomer. Through Christ and the indwelling Holy Spirit, John 14:23, we not only know how to be an overcomer, we have the ability to overcome and receive the rewards. For all eternity, our presence in heaven will reveal the magnitude of the mercy and love of our Heavenly Father.
