The light of God runs as a thread from Genesis to Revelation. God is light and in Him there is no darkness.1 John 1:5. He dwells in unapproachable light, 1 Timothy 6:16, covering Himself with light as with a cloak, Psalm 104:2, His throne ablaze with flames, Isaiah 7:9.
From an earthly point of view the light of God is almost unimaginable.
Light is Vital to Life
The earth was formless and darkness was over the surface of the deep, Genesis 1:1. Light was the first creative act of God in Genesis 1:3. The book of Revelation ends with the holy city having no need for the sun or moon to shine, for the glory of God illuminates it and its lamp is the Lamb, Revelation 21:23.
Light is a vital part of our lives. Without light from the sun, the earth’s land, water and air would all be frozen solid. Life on earth would cease to exist.
Just as it is in the natural, so it is in the spiritual. Without the light of God in our life we would be doomed to eternal damnation. The light of God is vital to our lives, both now and for all eternally.
Nature of Light
Light can be bent around corners, or travel at astronomical speed and it can be diminished or intensified. It can carry energy and momentum and be measured in wavelengths and be reflected. It can expand and radiate in all directions or interfere with other waves.
Light can be refractured as in a rainbow, for white light is all seven colours combined. Yet, these colours are always in the same order for light never changes its nature, just as God is the same yesterday, today and forever, Hebrews 13:8.
Light is a beam of energy and when light enters a room darkness has to flee. It doesn’t have to work at dispelling darkness, for light is. Light also creates a sound known as thunder, which is the sound of lightning hitting the earth. Light is the only form of energy we are able to visually see.
Jesus is our Light
Darkness is not a ‘thing’ but merely the absence of light. Jesus came in the form of a man that He might be the light of the world. He is our Way, the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by Him, John 14:6. Jesus is the light that guides us safely all the way to our heavenly abode.
We live in a world that is darkened by sin that threatens to overwhelm us. If you try to make your way along the road on a dark night, the darkness is overwhelming and you could lose your way. If you are fortunate enough to have a torch you can travel in safety. A ship at sea is guided to a safe harbour by the light from a lighthouse. We need the light of God to safely navigate the perils of this life.
Satan blinds man so he will not find his way back to the God of light. However, the Son of God is the Light of the world, John 8:12. He alone gives us access to the Father and all the promises written in the Word of God. Through Christ we are made sons of God, citizens of heaven and everything that Jesus is.
Darkness of Satan
Just as light cannot change its nature, neither can Satan change his nature of darkness. All men have the life of God in them, even the darkest sinner. However, Satan’s aim is to dampen and put out that light so that they will reject Jesus Christ and the wonderful gift of salvation the Father gave to us through the Son.
When sin entered the human race darkness replaced the light of God in mankind and the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord, Romans 6:23. Satan’s goal is to keep the minds of men dark so they will not receive the light of God into their life. The light of God that reveals the depths of who we are.
You are the Light of the World
The bible says we are the light of the world when God indwells us, Matthew 5:16. As we walk in His light we become a light to those around us. Often a smile or even a hug is enough to show others the light of the world. After all, it is the light of Jesus that shines through, not our own personal light.
When we share the Gospel with others, we share the light of God. Through Jesus Christ they too can become lights in world of spiritual darkness.
How to Stay in God’s Light
To stay in God’s light is to seek His face every day of our lives. We were created to worship God for who He is and praise Him for what He has done. Get hungry for His presence and enjoy sitting in the presence and so let your light shine forth to others.
Light is such a valuable commodity, yet we become so familiar with it we seldom give it any thought. However, when the light goes out we know all about it. Read His Word daily to get more and more light into your life. His Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path, Psalm 119:105.
The more time you spend with the Lord, the brighter your light will shine forth. It all depends on your relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Lights grow dim when we don’t spend time with the source. We need to make a conscious decision every day, to follow the Light of God.
The more you let the light of God into your life, the more the darkness will be dispelled. Let the light of God so shine in your life there will be no room for even the smallest amount of darkness. Let the light of God penetrate the depths of your very soul.
