What Value are God’s Mercies?6 min read

God’s mercies are new every morning. ‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases. His mercies never come to an end. They are new every morning. Great is His faithfulness’, Lamentations 3:22,23. Heedless of what the day may bring, God’s loving concern is always there for us, for He is an holistic God.

His Ever-Present Power Energy and Light

The Lord God is around us and in us, as is proved by His ever-present power, energy and light. ‘He will save. He will rejoice over you with joy. God will rest in His love and joy over you with singing’, Zephaniah 3:17.

That rejoicing is to ‘spin violently around.’ It is not just “Oh that’s good”, but an extremely strong emotion. The scripture in Zephaniah refers to God’s people, Israel. However, those who accept Jesus Christ as their Lord and Saviour also receive the blessings of God, for we are hid with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3 and are fellow-heirs with Christ, Romans 8:17.

God’s Steadfast Love

Steadfast is an old English word we are not familiar with. It means firmly fixed in place, immovable, and not subject to change. God’s love for us is not dependent on anything we can or cannot do, or what we have already done. His love and mercies are not open for debate, for they are eternal, and unchanging.

A by-product of God’s unswerving love for us, is that His mercies are endless and fresh every day. His mercies never wear out, not like our patience wears thin with those we are in contact with. God’s mercy never fails and never loses its ability to function on our behalf. We must never underestimate God’s compassion and forgiving nature. His favour, kindness, grace, blessings and guidance are new every single day of our life.

New Every Morning

Every day you get up God’s mercies are already there, refreshed and ready to go for whatever your day holds for you. He knows what you need before you even ask, Matthew 6:8.

His mercy is His omnipotence, as He is all-powerful. Everything comes from God; everything exists by His power; and everything is intended for His glory, Romans 11:36. He alone is the source and the sustainer.

His omnipresence means there is nowhere you can go that God is not there, Psalm 139:8. God created the universe. He fills all space and the universe is in Him. It takes a lot to get our human mind around this concept.

Then there is His omniscience, all-knowing. Nothing takes Him by surprise. The wonderful thing is that He knows and reveals the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. Your name was written in the book of life before the foundation of the world, Revelation 13:8. If you accept His salvation, He will not blot your name out.

Unending

His mercies are never ending. As parents we get impatient with the persistence of our kids. God never gets impatience with us, even when we don’t do things His way, don’t listen to His voice and don’t honour Him as we should. Despite all our failing, God never quits on us. Heedless of what our situation is, or what we do, or don’t do, we always have access to God and His mercies.

God has spoken and His word shall not return to Him empty, Isaiah 55:11. It will achieve what He has says it will do. All we have to do is to believe. We desperately need the kind of faith a child has in a father.

It really is as simple as that. It’s not attending church, doing good deeds, long hours in prayer, or studying His word. These things are important, but they are of little value if we do not have our faith firmly fixed on Him, as He is the author and finisher of our faith, Hebrews 12:2.

Inspiration

Scriptures that speak of God’s mercies are designed to encourage the created in the abundant grace and compassion of the Divine Creator. No matter what we face, His grace is sufficient to take us through, 2 Corinthians 12:9. There is nothing in your life He hasn’t foreseen.

When a child is naughty there are consequences. So, it is with God. He forgives us when we repent, and our sins are cast into His sea of forgetfulness, but there are consequences to our actions. However, God’s grace is sufficient to take us through all the fiery trials we face in this Satan energized world. The power of the Great I Am is on your side. Nothing formed against you can prosper, Isaiah 54:17.

Satan knows the time is short and the end is near, so he has ratcheted up his work on earth. Satan can tempt us, and God permits fiery trials to test and strengthen us. What Satan designs for our destruction, God will use to our victory, as seen in the life of Joseph, Genesis 50:20, and at Calvary.

I would rather spend today enjoying the abundant grace and compassion of the Divine than accept anything this world has to offer. The decision we make here is for eternity, while this life’s offers are fleeting as grass that wilts from the sun, James 1:10-12.

Free Will

God has given us a free-will, so it is up to us whether we believe God’s word, or choose to not place our trust in the Creator. Why not trust the One who knows the end from the beginning? He knew what you would do before you were formed in your mother’s womb, Jeremiah 1:5. God also knows what you will be when you close your eyes in that last goodbye.

You can choose to listen to your sinful, stubborn self, or you can opt for maturing into the fulness of the stature of Jesus Christ, Ephesians 4:13. He gave His life that you might have eternal life, John 3:16. There is no greater love than that, John 15:3, or evidence of God’s mercies.

The choice is always yours. For me, I wouldn’t want to get out of bed if God’s mercies weren’t there to guide, correct, protect, bless, comfort, forgive, save and keep me at peace, secure in His abundant and gracious love. His mercies are beyond value and new every morning.
