Who is the Real Me6 min read

Who is the real me is a question we should all ask ourselves on a regular basis, both in the natural and spiritually. You may be surprised at the answer if you are truly honest with yourself. Yet, you will discover you are a pearl of great value.

First the Natural

First there is the natural and then the spiritual. The first man is from the earth, earthy, the second man is from heaven, 1 Corinthians 15:46. This refers to the first Adam and the second Adam, Christ, but it also refers to our natural bodies.

Natural man is born of the flesh, but our human body has many elements in common with the earth.

Natural Me

The reality is that I am born a sinner. All men have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, Romans 3:23. No one teaches us to sin, it is an in born nature from the first Adam. From the day of our birth to the day of our death, we are all sinners.

The difference is when we accept Jesus Christ died in our place and we can receive God’s forgiveness.

Along with the sin nature, I am destined to die from the moment I take my first breath, for the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23. Death is as inevitable as my need to take another breath. When I accept Christ, I not only gain forgiveness for my sins, I am given the gift of eternal life, John 3:16.

Citizenship

The moment a child is born it instantly has citizenship to the nation it is born in. A baby born in America with Australian parents, is claimed to be a citizen of the United States of America.

However, all humanity is created as God’s own possession, for we were born to worship the Creator and He desires that we be born of the Spirit. Only those born of the Spirit have entrance into heaven, John 3:5.

However, God gave man a free will. We can choose to accept God’s gift of salvation and become a citizen of the kingdom of heaven, or reject His call. Those who refuse God’s call will have their name blotted out of the book of life, Revelation 3:5, and spend eternity separated from God.

Why Us

The Psalmist asked, what is man that You take thought of him, Psalm 8:4. Why should a holy God bother with a sinner? The answer lies in the fact that God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. Before God created Adam, God knew exactly what Adam would do.

Sending the Son to die for sinful humanity was not plan B. It was a plan designed from eternity. This has to make us take stock of who we really are, for we were created to fellowship our Heavenly Father.

A Worm

What value do I have, for I am a sinner even though I am a forgiven sinner? My value does not come from anything I have done or can do.

Jesus Christ left His home in glory in obedience to the Father and became one of us. Yet He was without sin, for He was total man and total God.

It was said of Jesus, I am a worm and not a man. A reproach of men and despised by the people, Psalm 22:6. If the Son of God could feel so debased, how much more must I be considered little more value than a worm?

Face to Face with God

Anyone who came face to face with the image of the awesome God, fell flat on his face on the ground. Ezekiel 1, Isaiah 6, the disciple John, Revelation 1. No human can stand in the presence of such holiness and power. Yet, God came in the flesh, that He might lift man to His level.

This can be compared to taking a worm from the earth and elevating it to a place of prominence. To the natural mind, this makes no sense at all. Yet, that is the action that took place through the death and resurrection of the Son of God.

Who Am I

Every person who has ever walked this earth has his or her name written in the book of life even before they are born, Revelation 17:8.

Naturally we are all sinners, but spiritually I am beyond value. How can this be? In the natural, something is valued by the price you pay for it. A Ferrari car is highly prized simply because of its price tag and performance ability. With a price tag of half a million dollars it is way beyond the vast majority of people. When we see a Ferrari on the street we suck in our breath in awe. If you could purchase a Ferrari for $100 would it hold the same place in your mind?

So, it is with human beings. We were bought with a price, 1 Corinthians 6:20. That the holy Son of God should be punished and die at the hands of mortal man, in the worst kind of agony man can devise, is totally beyond our comprehension. His shed blood is the currency that gives us entrance to a personal relationship with our Heavenly Father.

My Value

My value comes from how much it cost to make me a citizen of heaven. The amazing thing is that my body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 6:19, when I agree to become a follower of Jesus Christ.

If anyone love Me he will keep My word, and My Father will love him and We will come to him and make Our abode with him, John 14:23. When we decide to accept Jesus Christ as our Saviour, the Father, Son and Holy Spirit come to live inside us. This earthly body takes on its heavenly appointed purpose.

The Real Me is Hid in Christ

Our life is hidden with Christ in God, with all the wonders of being joint heir with Him, Colossians 3:3. That is so awesome.

Jesus said, the Father and I are One, John 10:30. If our lives are hidden in Christ we are one with the Father, the great I Am Who I Am, Genesis 3:14. We are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people for God’s own possession, Deuteronomy 14:2, 1Peter 2:9.

This has nothing to do with our ability. We are defenseless in a world that is ruled by Satanic influences. Only being hidden in Christ is our security, for those He predestined, He also called. And those whom He called He also justified. And those whom He justified He also glorified, Romans 8:29.30. That predestination is based on God’s foreknowledge.

The Way

Jesus made the Way, John 14:6, that we might be made whole in Him and enter a personal relationship with God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Because of God’s foreknowledge, we are justified at salvation, through the death and resurrection of the Son of God. Then we begin the sanctifying walk of maturing to the fulness of the statue of Jesus Christ, Ephesians 4:13, by the working power of the Holy Spirit. The end result is that we will eternally be glorified before God the Father in heaven.

The journey of overcoming is well worth it, from a worm to total perfection and glorification. Only then will I know the real me, as a child of the Living God and a pearl of great value.
