The power of thought is something we give very little thought to. However, our thoughts are vitally important to us, for they influence our well-being and determine our actions and decisions. Our mind is our most powerful tool.
Created
We are created in the image of God, Genesis 1:27, making each of us totally unique. God gave us a free will and the ability to communicate with Him, and we have the ability to imagine. We are also able to create.
Humans can think freely with great majesty and unlimited power, just as a wild horse races majestically and freely across the hills. Our feet are firmly planted on the ground, but our thoughts can soar to heights we have never dreamt of. Humans have the unique ability to reach into the far unknown and to dream big.
Things which the eye has not seen, and the ear has not heard. And which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love Him, 1 Corinthians 2:9.
Types of Thoughts
There are positive thoughts and realistic thoughts, besides negative thoughts. The choice is ours as to what we centre our thoughts on.
There is also the power of positive thinking, but it is no good saying I don’t have the flu when you do have the flu. We are healed by the stripes of Jesus, Isaiah 53:6, but we need to deal with reality through a positive mindset. I have the flu. I will deal with it accordingly and take appropriate action.
Positive thinking alone does not command God, for without faith it is impossible to please God, Hebrews 11:6. The most powerful positive thinking is to base our thinking on what the Word of God says and reach beyond ourselves, always knowing that God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10 and has an eternal plan and purpose.
Negative Reality
The reality is that we are often in a negative situation, but if we focus on the negativity, we start to see only that. Harbor that type of thinking long enough and you become a negative person with low self-esteem. Negativity needs to be dealt with for it can hide poorly expressed anger that impacts our entire life.
Stress destroys the body’s hormone balance, impairs the immune system and drains positive brain chemicals. Paul wrote, give thanks with a grateful heart, 1 Thessalonians 5:18. That doesn’t mean that life is easy, but there is always something to be grateful for. Christ died for our sins and through His blood we are cleansed and made whole.
Power of Thought
We act according to our basic and natural instincts, for to be human is to act human. However, all conscious behaviour is preceded by and arises out of our thoughts. Think only on earthly things and we lower our sights. Think on heavenly things and we find ourselves lifted from this earthly realm into the heavenly, based on what the God’s Word declares.
What we think predicts what we will become, for as he thinks within himself, so he is, Proverbs 23:7. We are already raised up with Christ and seated with Him in heavenly places, Ephesians 2:6. Our lives are hid with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3. We need to appropriate this through faith in what Christ did at Calvary.
We can act spontaneously, but it is our thought-pattern that shapes our world. Let the weak say I am a mighty man, Joel 3:9. It is not that we are superhuman, but I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength, Philippians 4:13. Seek His face in all things. Either we believe God is in control, for He is the great I Am That I Am, Exodus 3:3, or we try to do it all ourselves.
Our Will
Our will us a servant of our thoughts, for even our emotions follow our thinking, which stirs feelings and feelings trigger action, which is why we are to take every thought captive, 2 Corinthians 10:5. We have conscious and unconscious thoughts that need to be guided, protected and generally ruled over, for our mind is like that wild horse. Head strong and keen to do its own thing.
The mind is the battlefield between good and evil, however, we battle not against flesh and blood, but against spiritual forces, Ephesians 6:12. In the armor of God the head is covered with the helmet of salvation, Ephesians 6:17, keeping our mind in perfect peace, Isaiah 26:3. A double minded man is unstable in all his ways, James 1:8.
Our thoughts are our true driving force. We live in a world dominated by sin, but Christ has overcome sin. God is the winner in this spiritual war and those who believe in Him are on the winning side.
New Pathways
As we enter further into the end times as prophesied in the Bible, the world around us will grow darker by the day. However, when we focus on all the bad things our brain chemistry is influenced. Our energy and ultimately our external environment is affected. There is no greater asset than having a Holy Spirit led mind.
Happy thoughts release endorphins, giving an overall feeling of well-being. You may not be able to change your circumstances, but you can change the way you look at them, for God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God. To those who are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28.
That is not just the power of positive thinking, but the reality of who God is. By changing our thought patterns we begin to change our brain’s wiring, creating new neural pathways. Therefore, set your mind on things above, not on the things that are on earth, Colossians 3:2.
Power of Sight
Next to the power of the mind, is the power of sight. Eve saw the fruit that it was good to eat. She let her mind dwell on the thought of eating the fruit, until it became a reality. Lucifer saw the power of God and allowed covetousness to fill his heart, Ezekiel 14:12ff, and sin became a reality. Evil exists because good exists, but evil did not become a reality until it was conceived in the mind.
What we feast our eyes on is what penetrates our mind, for the eyes are a gateway to the mind and a window into the soul. It is through sight that sin can penetrate our heart and mind so we need to guard what our eyes look at. Particularly in a world where soft pornography and violence is widely accepted as the norm.
The Powerful Mind
The mind is powerful because it is where we find faith, strength, wisdom, love, imagination, understanding, will, order, zeal, renunciation and life. Particularly in the coming year let us lift up our heads, because our redemption is drawing near, Luke 21:28. This is the time to stand strong in our faith in a loving Heavenly Father, as we become the Power of One.
