How to find real treasure is an elusive mirage that can never be reached in earthly terms, for it is temporal. All that glitters is not gold, expensive jewels, or great possessions. There is no happiness to be found down that road, only an ever-insatiable appetite for it is another myth.

Everyone dreams of the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. We all want that next ‘big’ thing, whatever that is. The human mind says finding real treasure will change our lives.

What is Treasure

Treasure is whatever a person considers to be of great value. It can be practical and physical in the form of things, or emotional. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but what we see as treasure reveals our true values.

The bible is clear on this issue. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also, Luke 12: 34. You become what you love for we have circular thinking.

Earthly Treasure

There are numerous treasures on earth, but all are temporal. They vary from possessions, relationships, personal achievement, position, or some exciting discovery, including nature.

All are reminders of God’s blessings and His numerous gifts toward us. For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen. Being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse, Romans 1:20.

Temporal Treasure

Our life on earth is bound by time, space and matter, relating to sight, reason and our senses. The treasure most humans seek is to have good standing among men. We are judged by what car we drive, what home we dwell in, how much is in our bank account, and what our social status is. All these are temporal and vanity of vanity, Ecclesiastes.

Storing up treasures on earth is the sure road to dissatisfaction and disappointment. He who loves money will not be satisfied with money, nor he who loves abundance with its income….. The full stomach of the rich man does not allow him to sleep, Ecclesiastes 5:10,12. Jesus said to the rich young ruler, Go sell your possessions and give to the poor and you will have treasure in heaven, Matthew 19:21.

When the drive for earthly treasure consumes our heart and mind, it robs us of our true and only worthwhile focus. One that is not only eternal but produces eternal results. My God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:19. No man’s soul can find true and lasting satisfaction in the temporal, only in God’s one answer.

Greatest Treasure on Earth

Saints of God who are totally sold out to being a follower of Jesus Christ are the true treasure. You are a chosen people, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people or God’s own possession, 1 Peter 2:9. Christ’s followers have citizenship in heaven from which they eagerly wait for a Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ, Philippians 3:20. That citizenship makes them the truly greatest treasure on earth.

If anyone loves Me he will keep My word and My Father will love Him. And We will come to him and make Our abode with him, John 14:23. The real treasure on earth are those who worship, love and serve the risen Lord Jesus Christ every day.

Hidden Treasure

Real treasure is always hidden. I will give you hidden treasures, riches stored in secret places. So that you may know that I am the Lord, the God of Israel, who summons you by name, Isaiah 45:3. That true treasure is other-worldly, for they are in the world, but not of it, John 15:19. The true follower of Christ is already seated in heavenly places, Ephesians 2:6.

The true church of God is hidden with Christ in God, Colossians 3:3. It’s not enough to know about Christ, it requires a personal and intimate relationship with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

True treasures have their eyes set on the reality of eternity. For all eternity the true believer will fellowship God, forever in the glorious presence of the Almighty I Am That I Am, Exodus 3:14.

The Cost of Treasure

Treasure is treasure because of its high value in the eye of the beholder. The human mind cannot comprehend the cost of man’s redemption for God so loved the world, John 3:16. He not only created the world He gave Himself to redeem lost mankind through the Son, for the Word was God, John 1:1.

Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have received from God. You are not your own, for you have been bought with a price,1 Corinthians 6:19,20. A  price which none but God could pay.

The heavenly host stand in awe each time a sinner is redeemed, Luke 15:7. Yet we pay little heed to what a highly valued treasure we are. Christ’s Bride has a value that is beyond anything we can imagine. She is the One who will be caught away to the marriage supper of the Lamb, Revelation 19:6-9. The one that cost Him everything.

How to Find Real Treasure

Finding real treasure is all about how much of our life we are willing to yield to the Holy Spirit. It needs to be all of Him and none of us, Proverbs 3:5,6. For I know the plans that I have for you, declares the Lord. Plans for welfare not for calamity, to give you a future and a hope, Jeremiah 29:11. Set your minds on the things above, not on things that are on earth, Colossians 3:1-2.

In these tumultuous times it is vital that true followers of Christ prayerfully check the desires of their heart each day, for God will give you those desires, Psalm 37:4. Do they line up with the will of God for your life? Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness and all these things will be added to you, Matthew 6:33. You are His real treasure, for it is only found by being still and thirsty, seeking the face of God, Psalm 63:1.
