Why God chooses to need us, is something not many people stop to think about. They are too busy considering whether or not they need God. Or they simply want what He can do for them, rather than entering into a covenantal relationship with Him.

God is Complete

God has many attributes, such as holiness, righteousness, mercy, love, truth, justice, etc. However, the fundamental fact is that God is total in Himself. He blesses, loves, and empowers His people, yet nothing of Himself is diminished. You cannot add to God or detract anything from Him. He is the Great I Am That I Am, Genesis Exodus 3:14.

Why did God create Adam when He knew what Adam would do? Or make the way for sinners to be redeemed and reclaimed from the kingdom of darkness? God’s ways are beyond human comprehension, Isaiah 55:8,9.

God is God

God is omniscient – all-knowing, omnipresent – present everywhere, omnipotent – all powerful. He knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. God knew what Satan would do before He created Him. He knew how Eve would act and Adam react, Genesis 3. God knew what suffering and heartache would follow and how degraded fallen man would become.

God announced His master plan, Genesis 3:15, at the moment of the catastrophe in the Garden of Eden. He had already provided the Way of salvation, John 14:6, redemption, justification, sanctification and glorification, for those who would believe. The Lamb was slain before the foundation of the world, and the promise of salvation established, Revelation 13:8.

Does God Need Us?

The short answer is no. In His sovereignty God elected to have a people for His own possession, 1 Peter 2:9. The wonder is that He chose to have the redeemed walk in a covenantal relationship with Him. A relationship that is tried and tested by fire on earth, but it is a relationship that will last into eternity.

Our relationship with God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is the most important factor in our life. The eternal benefits are beyond our understanding for only we see as in a mirror dimly, 1 Corinthians 13:12. To him who overcomes I will grant to sit with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne, Revelation 3:21.

God lives in the eternal now which like many of God’s mysteries, is difficult for us to comprehend. With Him there are no yesterdays, or tomorrows, only ‘now’. We are predestined to be conformed into the image of the Son, Romans 8:29,30, for we are already seated in heavenly places, Ephesians 2:6.

The Trinity

The Godhead is made up of three Persons, yet all three are One, 1 John 5:7. Whatever One does the Other Two are in instant accord. God chose to reveal Himself to fallen man, through the Son of God. Jesus came to earth as total man, yet He was total God.

God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit bought about a covenant that man has the option to enter into. God gave man a free will so man can choose to accept, or reject so great a salvation, Hebrews 2:3. Jesus said, If anyone loves Me he will keep my word, and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make our abode with him, John 14:23. God does not need us, yet He chose to draw us to Himself, at a cost we cannot begin to comprehend.

The advent of God on earth proved how much God loves the created, John 3:16. Jesus proved that a sinless man could live in communication with the Father, totally defeating Satan’s warped plans. Christ’s death and resurrection made the Way for sinful man, doomed to an eternal death, to be reunited with a holy God in an eternal relationship. Therefore, we do not walk this earthly walk alone.

The Covenant

A covenant requires two parties in order to form a legal agreement. The two parties, in this instance, are God and God. He chooses to operate only within His covenant.

Jesus went to Calvary in obedience to the will of the Father. All Three of the Godhead were present and in total accord. The Cross of Calvary was a momentous spiritual battle with Satan, who is limited.

Jesus bore the sins of the world, 2 Corinthians 5:21, and took the punishment fallen man rightly deserves. Once Adam sinned God could not legally revoke the justifiable punishment. At Calvary God’s punishment fell on God, and God formed a covenant with God. By God’s grace believers are made recipients of that covenant.

God Sovereignly Chose Us

God sovereignly chose the nation Israel to be His representative on earth, as His wife. A chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation. A people for God’s own possession, Deuteronomy 14:2; 1 Peter 2:9.

The believing Gentile and Jew are grafted into that promise, Romans 11:19, Jesus Christ is the only way that we might eternally sit in covenantal relationship with God. We are hid with Christ Jesus in God, Colossians 3:3. We are His witnesses on earth doing the bidding of the Father, by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Why God Chooses to Need Us?

Why God chooses to need us has an important key. It is all about faith in Him, for without faith it is impossible to please Him, Hebrews 11:6. We receive God’s salvation by faith, Ephesians 2:8. A W Tozer wrote, ‘Unbelief is perverted faith, for the non-believer makes a god of himself. He prefers to put his faith in a dying man, instead of an eternal God’.

George Muller said ‘Faith is the assurance that the thing which God has said in His Word is true, and that God will act according to what He has said. This reliance on God’s Word, this confidence is faith in the One who created us.”

God made a Sovereign choice when He created man and we must make a choice to accept God through faith. From an earthly point of view, we will never understand why God chooses to need us and use us for His purposes and then empowers us for service to Him. Why, will always remain a mystery, when He could have just used the angels. The miracle is that every day we can get out of bed and glory in the grace and mercy of a loving Heavenly Father.  ‘What no eye has seen, what no ear has heard, and what no human mind has conceived’ — the things God has prepared for those who love him.’ 1 Corinthians 2:9.
