The greatest treasure on earth is not what men have long searched for, such as gold, silver, or rare earth, and metallic elements such as lithium. These things make men rich but that is not the greatest treasure.
In the Beginning
In the beginning there was only God. He was alone and self-sufficient, requiring and needing nothing. Father, Son and Holy Spirit dwelt in total unison and perfect harmony. However, God had an eternal plan.
God created space so He had somewhere to place matter. In spite of what some scientists try to prove, the true origin of matter lies in deep silence, undiscoverable by man. God then made room for motion so He created time, where things could change.
In order for this to happen He created sequence time. Solomon called it seasons. There is an appointed time for everything, and there is a time for every event under heaven, Ecclesiastes 3:1. Then God made the laws that govern time and space and matter.
In His Image
When everything was perfect and in order, God created the greatest treasure on earth. He created life so there could be a consciousness of time, space, motion and matter, though God dwells outside those things.
The Father, Son and Holy Spirit created man in Their own image, according to Their likeness, Genesis 1:26. Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honour and power. For You created all things, and because of Your will they existed and were created, Revelation 4:11.
Man was created to fellowship God in the beauty of holiness. In human terminology, God is a perfect egotist, for He is far above and beyond all creation, with no need outside Himself.
God’s Pleasure
Man could add nothing to God. However, God is love and He so loved the world that He desired a creature that could fellowship Him for His pleasure, Psalm 149:4.
Man is body, soul and spirit and of all God’s creation, only man has a conscious awareness of God. For it is God who is at work in you, both to will and to work for His good pleasure, Philippians 2:13.
God’s Glory
Man was created for God’s glory, Isaiah 43:7. He is the crowning jewel in God’s creation and the greatest treasure. Man was to be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it, Genesis 1:28.
Men search long and hard for the hardest matter known to man, called a diamond. He then cuts and polishes it until it sparkles with life. However, man is unique and God’s true treasure. A diamond on earth designed to reflect the glory of God, just as the moon reflects the light from the sun.
Free Will
However, man is not a dumb piece of matter, or a robot, or some super AI. God gave man a free will, with the ability to make moral choices. It should be the responsible act of every man to bring himself into a place where the Creator will be eternally pleased with him.
Adam fellowshipped God in a perfect garden. We cannot comprehend the abilities that Adam had, as is seen in God giving him the task of naming all the animals.
Then Adam did the unthinkable and disobeyed the One who had given Him life. Mankind and all the earth were instantly thrust under the curse of sin and the wages of sin is death, Romans 6:23.
No Mistake
God is the same yesterday, today and forever, Hebrews 13:8, and does not change His mind with changing circumstances. Nothing in the Word of God contradicts itself, it is the way we interpret it that makes some people think differently. What we do know, is that He is a holy, just and the infinite Creator of all things.
In human terms, when we create something and it goes wrong, we simply throw it out and start over again. Perhaps God did, for many hold to the theory that there was a pre-Adamic race. If there was, only God knows the purpose for it.
The prophet wrote, God formed the earth and made it. He established it and did not create it a waste place, but formed it to be inhabited, Isaiah 45:18. Then we read, the earth was formless and void and darkness was over the surface of the deep, Genesis 1:2. God created and saw that it was good, Genesis 1.
Eternal Plan
God had a plan that was devised in the far distant eternity, long before anything was created. God thought about man long before He created man in His image. He loved man so much He planned man’s redemption, salvation, forgiveness, and justification, sanctification and glorification.
God’s love is so great we cannot comprehend its breadth and length and height and depth, Ephesians 3:18, just as we cannot comprehend the majesty and magnificence of God. Can a diamond look up at the cutter and tell him how grateful it is that he has given it life? Can the lump of clay tell the potter what to make?
See Only Dimly
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part, but then I will know fully just as I also have been fully known, 1 Corinthians 13:12. Note, Paul used past tense, ‘As I also have been fully known’.
All we can do is to bow in humble adoration and wonder, that God knew us before we were even conceived, Jeremiah 1:5. Our names were written in the Book of Life before the foundation of the earth because that is when we were hid in Christ Revelation 13:8.
Responsibility
God made us for Himself. Like any good parent, God is responsible for the outcome, in that He protects, teaches and leads us through His Spirit. More than that, God makes His abode in the believer, John 24:23.
Any child can go against the leading and instruction of the parent. Many men live in total rebellion against God, and many deny even the existence of God. It is their eternal loss, for God will lose nothing of Himself when sinful man is committed to the Lake of Fire for all eternity.
End from the Beginning
God knows the end from the beginning, Isaiah 46:10. Nothing takes God by surprise and all things work together for good, for those who love God, for those who are called according to His purpose, Romans 8:28.
God always knew what we would become and those who would accept Christ as their Lord and Saviour. We still have to work out our sanctification, for we are called to mature into the fullness of the stature that belongs to Christ, Ephesians 4:13. Followers of Christ are all walking towards the day when they will be a perfect man.
The Greatest Treasure
All treasure costs, and we are no exception. We were bought with a price that is beyond comprehension – the sinless blood of the Son of God, 1 Corinthians 6:19.
We are God’s diamond that has not only been released from the depths of the earth and fear of death. By the Spirit of God we are carefully cut and polished. When this walk is over on earth we will we take our place as the greatest treasure, and fully reflect the glory of our Creator, the Great I Am That I Am, Genesis 3:3. It’s not about us, but all about God. He does not need us, but we need Him.
We are the greatest treasure simply because of the enormous cost it took to purchase us from the curse of sin and death. And because God chose to choose a relationship with us.
